The
Reva Electric Car Company, RECC, was incorporated in 1995
as a joint venture between the Bangalore based Maini Group
and AEVT Inc of Irvindale, California, to manufacture environment-friendly,
cost-effective electric vehicles for city mobility. The first
prototype ready in mid 1996 had undergone extensive tests
at the Automobile Research Association of India, Pune, for
homologation and was certified roadworthy. Reva is an elegant,
light-yet rugged, two-door sedan comfortably seats 2 adults
in the front and 2 children upto a height of 5' and 6"
(165 cms) in the rear. It has a range of 80 kilometers in
stop-and-go city driving, and a top speed of 65 km/h. Reva
Electric Car Company, has partnered with UK-based Going-Green
Ltd., for marketing the vehicle in the United Kingdom and
other parts of Europe.
The company is also set to export the EV to Malta, Malaysia
and Japan by the end of 2003.
Mr.
Chetan Maini received the Thomas Alva Edison Award for Innovation
in technology at Mexico City recently. Instituted by the Young
Entrepreneurs Organisation YEO and the Edison Preservation
Foundation, this Annual Award is for entrepreneurs making
innovative contributions to Society and was under the "Stop
Innovating and Start Playing " category from out of 47
nominees from 8 countries and 27 finalists.
